Choice of skill might be very confusing because there a millions of them. Many people today has a lot of cause to thank God for the skill they have chosen, while many are so sad over their wrong choices.
Skills and abilities are tasks that you naturally do well, talents and strengths that you bring to the table as a student and/or employee. These include natural capabilities you’ve always had, in addition to specific knowledge and skills you’ve acquired through experience and training. Every human being has one or more inert skills which must be put to use wisely.
Below are criteria for choice of skill
- PURPOSE; At times, the choice of skill is not what matters, what matters most is the amount of gain someone has gotten from a particular skill, thus, in summary, your choice of a skill should be based on your expectations. It should be noted that expectation differs from person to person and community to community, family to family. Mr A may be expecting good money back home at the end of the day. Mr B. might be expecting a gain of satisfying his wife or family. Mr C on the other hand might just be looking for that name.
- PERSONAL EXAMINATION: someone should mostly consider his personal power, ability or strength. Some skills require energy, good health, special experience, height, language, etc., thus, it is better to measure the skill with your physical capabilities before adopting. It is not best to consider the achievement of others in choosing a skill – you may not know his physical ability. Skills that worsens your health conditions should not be considered
- AVAILABILITY; it is better to consider the availability of such skill within your locality. How plenty, how scarce, what is the distance, how about raw materials? Consider a lot and remember that this choice maybe was to give you food on your table.
- ADDED TO RESUME: most skills are to boost a credential, thus could be considered necessary.
- FUTURE OF A SKILL: one should consider the future of a particular skill. There are skills that fade away with time and should be taken cognizance for a replacement.
